“Data Recovery” myths de-bunked
“Data Recovery: the process of salvaging data from damaged, failed, corrupted, or inaccessible secondary storage media when it cannot be accessed normally” – wikipedia.org
Yesterday I was spending time with a friend whom I haven’t seen in quite some time. As usual, when people come into my room and see all sorts of computers and peripherals on my desk, conversations tend to move towards a technical direction. My friend says to me, “I couldn’t turn my computer on – and I was NOT going to spend hundreds of dollars on data recovery”. My jaw dropped.
It was then that I realized that the term “data recovery” is one that is shrouded by two critical falsities: “if my computer doesn’t turn on then my data is lost forever” and ” if I want my data back, i’ll need to shell out hundreds of dollars to do it”. This is simply not the case. At least not always.
