Mobile Operating Systems

Smartphones are the wave of the future. Cell Phones in general are now your portable computer system. With apps for social networking sites, photos, and even your internet gateway, smartphones keep you connected anywhere and at anytime. Over the past couple of years, we’ve seen an explosion of various types of devices with different features, and the software they run. Thank Apple’s iPhone for breaking the smartphone OS to the mainstream….

Its hard to pick and choose just one device. I feel it is very important to not only select the hardware, but even the software that runs your phone. The major players (Apple, Palm, Blackberry, Google’s Android, Microsoft’s Windows Mobile and Nokia’s Symbian) offer a variety of options with different styles all on their own. You may notice that there is one that you may not have heard of much, which is Symbian.

Here is a fact: Symbian actually holds 50% of the world wide market for smartphones. They are not a big player in the USA, but think of them as the “Microsoft Windows” of the mobile realm for the rest of the world.

I personally am partial to Windows Mobile because i do own a Windows phone (my phone runs Windows Mobile Professional 5.0 AKU 2.2). I feel that the OS is very robust and can offer a lot for a consumer, but Microsoft never really made it big for the casual consumer (which may  change with version 6.5, and later version 7 of their mobile OS). If you know your way around a Windows OS, then Windows Mobile will feel familiar, just maybe some time getting used to. I also wanted to mention: I am a huge fan of mobile technology as a whole and i love all of these new devices that are created, no matter what OS they run.

I found an article that is definitely worth checking out. Maximun PC explains the pros and cons of each mobile OS. They do a great job explaining each aspect of the software layer and how it collaborates with the hardware. All major operating systems go head to head and i feel it is not bias in anyway.
